HI Maurice,
I am relatively new to Clayart ( and pottery, for that matter ) but
Ive run a listserv for overglaze painters since 1997 that is in a
similar vein. On any given day, we have about 1500 subscribers to
the list , yet only 40 or so post on a regular basis , so does
that make the lurkers any less valid? I say God bless the lurkers...
Without them, we'd be talking to ourselves (...and I already do that at
home :O)
Often, on our PPIO list, whether someone chooses to answer a question
or not is a matter of timing. I hear from listers who say :" Oh, we
FINALLY got a question I knew the answer to ... but several people already
answered it so I didnt bother." Sometimes its a matter of people not
feeling they have anything to contribute to the discussion and other
times it may be people afraid they'll be flamed if they do . That
doesnt make them any less vital a part of our listserv....OR Clayart.
If you want to do a mug exchange with only those people you know,
why not organize one off the list? Email your favorite Clayart
writer-in-ers and ask them all if they want to do a private exchange..If
they are gonna be at the next NCECA, maybe you all can get together in
the hotel lounge one evening.
But if youre just wanting to trade with those whose names you see
on a regular basis on Clayart, you could be missing a piece from a
great......but silent........potter
Just my opinion!

OK my 2 cents.........
I don't consider myself a true lurker as I do tend to chime in once in a
while (case in point).
However, if I had a chance to go to NCECA and be part of the mug exchange
-rest assured I would want to!!! AND I'd make damn sure the pot I put in
would be one of my best. It would not be as nice as Mel's or Tony's or about
a dozen other people's but it would be mine and I am a member of Clayart.
If I am excluded from the exchange simply because; A) I am basically a
hobby/ part time potter, B) I have been away from clay for the last year and
a half due to teachers college and C) because I don't post all the time with
wonderful (or not so wonderful) answers to questions or even with my
opinion, then I would be really ticked off and probably be completely
turned off of the list!!!
I have been on Clayart for several years now and download messages sometimes
hourly! (Unless I am away). Just because I don't work in clay every day and
don't have a particular expertise, should not exclude me from feeling like a
REAL member.

Just my opinion mind you - but I want to keep my name out there so I can
participate when I can get there!!!!

Today I went to the archives and searched for Janine LaMaie. We had
never heard of each other when I drew her fabulous cone 6 blue/green oil
spot glazed mug in the Clayart room at Portland. I see from the archives
that she is quite interested in glazes. Hopefully this new friend will
correspond with me about my new electric kiln and firing schedules and cone
6 glazes.
Janine's mug is now part of my collection of mugs and teabowls made by
some very outspoken and impressive (if not famous) Clayart potters. Ron Roy
beware.....Janine makes a smooth and pleasant lip on her mug, which may just
compete with my usual favorite :>)
BTW....I'm so glad that Kelly drew my little woodfired pot !
