some wacky sidelights...

Hi Wayne, all...

For what it's worth...(a nice old Buffalo
Springfield song it so happens...too of course...)
Lol...

Just as an aside...

Just a little technicality anyway...

Even if autoclaved, dessicated at length, baked,
or
cleaned however so in Solvents or Bleach and so
on...

Used, contemporary Dental Tools not consigned
to incineration or disinfection at very high
temperatures ( above the vaporization of Carbon
anyway) , are known to be reliable vectors for the
transmission of prion diseases, such as 'Kuru',
the pesky New Variant Kruetzfeldt-Jacob's
Disease, Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease,
Fatal Familial Insomnia, et al, (the 'hominid's
complaint' versions
of, or appearently also nee,
of, 'Mad Cow' or it's a.k.a.,as Bovine Spongiform
Encephelopathy,
more or less, ) typically confused or deftly
evaded, with
dismissive frowning diagnosese or attributions of
Altzheimer's and other
unhappy syndromes, when noted at all as
conspicuous.

One would not contract such from handleing these
kinds of Tools of course merely, unless one
manages to get them against some open wound or
lesion or cut or thin bruise, or, touches an Eye
or inner nostril with them or introduces the Tool
into one's bloodstream or subdermal flesh or
mucous
membranes in some way...

Or, in theory, if improbable in practice, if one
touches such Eye or lesion or nostril of
themselves or of others with their
fingers after handleing used 'contemporary'
Medical-Dental kinds of Tools which have
communicated with the Blood, syrums, gums, flesh,
viscerae, exudae, lesions, marrow, lymph,
pus, or mucous membranes of others who are/were
discretely afflicted with prion
disease...of whom there are presumably many tens
or possibly hundreds of millions presently
undiagnosed and who are for the time being,
approximately asymptomatic.

Medical Tools disused from before roughly the
1970s should be, would be, considered extremely
'safe'...really old ones, moreso of course...as
well as that the truely 'old' ones are ever so
much more charming, or ghastly, or as one pleases
to construe them...

But...

If any Dentist uses previously used and or
on-goingly-used Tools on
patients, or allows their Assistants to do so, for
routine debrideing, gingivitis probe-depth
cringe-making for the patient
investigations, or
other sundry ministerings or for extractions even,
he
or she is at-once,
an able and
practical vector and agent in the spread and
transmission of prion disease, and should be
firmly reminded or scolded pointedly not to occupy
such a role, as to
do so clearly contradindicates their Hyppocratic
Oath...if they ever took such at all anymore to
begin with.

If you (abstract plural 'you') doubt this, ask
your local County Medical
examiner
if he would rather be poked ( if the choice was
only 'A', or 'B', ) with a rusty nail that was
laying in some bubbley 'Oyster' of spitum on a
skid row sidewalk that
has a dog-log next to it, or, be poked with a
clean, shiney, used, modern Dental Tool of any
kind...

( Or, what kind of 'Moon Suit' he or she would
wear if obliged to do an autopsy and or cranial
saw-trepanning, on a so called
'Alhtzeimer's' case...)

Lol...

He or she will give you a funny look, maybe, then
a sober shadow will pass their face, and, they
will elect the former...then fuss with something
nervously for relief of thought...

Anyway...

Oh well...

Lost in the great shuffle of it all...

Little details...

...sigh...

Love,

Phil

Not to put anyone's knickers in a twist (talk
about crossposting!)
but a word of caution here.

I was informed recently by the
police-officer-neighbor-of-mine that
possession of dental tools is (in some locations)
illegal. At least here in
S Florida. It has something to do with a rash of
(specific nationality)
persons in the Miami area practicing dentistry
without a license, usually
from their garages. In other locations, these
wonderful tools are considered
"lock-picking devices", and are similarly banned
(CT) (sigh).

Personally, I have a full set. I keep some in the
house in one of the
bathrooms, and some with my clay tools. (A former
partner was a dentist.)
"They" can take away my tools when they can pry
them out of my cold dead
clay-covered hands. If they can get past my rifle.
IMHO.

Dental tools can usually be found for sale from
Harbor Freight (keyword
search the website). You can also get them
sometimes from
Sportsmansguide.com, and you can always buy them
(very pricey) new from
Patterson Dental Supply. There's nothing quite
like shiny new tools .

Best,

some wacky sidelights...

Wow! Let's not be too alarmist Phil. I'm guessing
each of us has a better chance to be hit by lightening
this year than to encounter a single prion on a dental
tool.

While it is true that they are difficult to
inactivate, one needs to worry only about surgical
tools that have come in contact with brain or other
neurological tissue:
http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/resolve?id=doi:10.1086/319997

I've had some rough dentists, but none of them
literally picked my brain!

And one article I saw said that very high
concentrations of bleach will inactivate them.

Cheers, Linda
