press moulds - air release

updated tue 21 mar 06

I have been usin a lot of press molds lately..and
frankly, the time waiting for the clay to release
seems to be a bit of a waste. The item I am working
on, is mostly production, so the more I could get out,
the merrier.

I have been thinking about doing a RAM style mold,
only with plaster.

Does anyone have any experience using air relase with
plaster, instead of hydrocal?

HI Jacob,

I use hydrostone because it is so much more durable
but I don't wait for the tile to release. I carve
a notch in the mold at the edge of the opening.
Then after pressing the tile, I clean this notch out
and use my compressor and air tip to blow air under
the tiles and it pops loose and I put a board over
it and turn it over and it comes out. You can do
this with any plaster.

I have done RAM type air release molds using ceramical, which is a
gypsum cement, yes,
rather than a plaster like pottery plaster #1.
I also use the hydrocal so it does double duty.
generally it is favored for machine pressings because of its hardness
and durability.
I favor that extra hardness even for hand pressing.
not sure how the pottery plaster performs in the air purge process,
but one could always try it.

There is another way to release pieces from molds
in is somewhere in between waiting for pieces to self release and
making RAM style purge molds.
Basically , you shoot a bit of compressed air in the place where the
clay and the mold come together
hold the nozzle right up to the seam.
Involves a bit of playing around to find the sweet spot, and handling
it all as it releases
but the pieces pop right out, when still wet.

not knowing exactly what you are making, can't advise for sure, but
this technique
works quite well and speeds up the process.

The way I use plaster and press moulding is not to rely on the plaster =
to stiffen the product, but I paint the mould with a watery solution of =
PVA or Wood Glue, so I get the plaster surface totally water resistant.
When dry and ready for use I oil the mould and press the clay in, skim =
off the waste and either use a compressor to release the pressing, or =
more commonly I just use a little clay pad at the edge of the pressing =
and make sure the clay wants to come out, place some newspaper under and =
flip the pressing out. The oil I use is a propriatory brand of release =
oil as this does not matter if it mixes with the clay - all brick and =
tile manufacturers use this stuff in great quantities.
This is a method I have used sucessfully on very complex shapes. Easy =
peasey lemon squeezy.

Hi Jacob
I switched over to air release a while ago and wouldnt go back for anything=
.
It takes a little experimentation, I blew a big hole in the first one I
tried to cast.
I also use ceramical,
