email clayart filter system

updated mon 27 mar 06

To listserv and all

My son suggested that Clayart automatically put something simple - such as [CA]- in front of each subject line that comes from/through clayart listserv. Once set up, this is done automatically for all mail accepted by the listserve.
That way we can each simply set up a folder for all mail marked "[CA]" and that folder should only contain clayart mailings, and elimin ate all or most of the spam coming through clayart.

This should be possible through the list configuration, since this is standard (10 years) in lists.

I use Microsoft Outlook and have set up a folder to collect all my
Clayart mail--without needing for the listserv to do anything special.

Hi Marianne
You can set up a clayart folder on your yahoo account. Go to mail
options and then to filters. Make a clayart folder. that's what I did

and it works great.

Some things I understand:

1. Set up an email filter that is: if "to" contains
clayart@lsv.ceramics.org, send to "clayart folder"(make a new folder).

2.Also set up a filter that is: if "from" is not in my addressbook
and is not in my previous recipients, send to "check these" folder
(make a new folder).

These 2 protect you from most spam, which ends up in "check these'
rather than your inbox. But new emails from people you don't know and
might WANT to know end up there too. So you can't just delete all of it.

The person with the worst spam problem due to Clayart is Mel. I'm not
clear why that is. Maybe because his email is on every single Clayart
post in the archives and the spam bots are finding all those.

If the Clayart Listserv is sending the Clayart posts to him and the
"from" is clayart@lsv.ceramics.org or listserv@lsv.ceramics.org he
can filter all those into a Clayart folder. But if they are coming to
him with "from" as the original poster then he can't really filter
anything.....it would be a huge job to make sure each clayarter was
in his address book. So spam and the Clayart posts he needs to check
are all mixed together.

Maybe Marianne's son thinks the (CA) WE would use before each
subject line would allow Mel to create a filter for that and the
spammers wouldn't be using it.
But as far as all the Clayarters we already have the solution.....

There's still a lot I don't understand!

Please do NOTt do this. It will make sorting my Clayart inbox by
subject useless.

use this on your incoming mail and it will all go to a clayart folder
without affecting searches

IF mail comes FROM 'Clayart <'">CLAYART@LSV.CERAMICS.ORG>'
THEN send to 'clayart' folder

You don't need to filter on the subject. You can check the reply-to
header. If it's the clayart address ...

I already use a separate inbox for Clayart posts. The
problem with Clayart spam is that a hundred spams get
sent to the moderator via the listserve, sent just like
real posts and interspersed with a hundred real posts,
and sometimes a few get ok'd instead of deleted. As
far as the computer knows, they ARE clayart posts.

I'm not at all sure that Outlook has an option that filters mail based
on contents of the "TO" address. Mozilla does, but then Mozilla is a
long way from the fully featured Outlook, as in having a fully
integrated Calendar, Tasks, Notes. So if you are using Outlook, it may
not be easy to do this. I think I did it with a rule that "CLAYART"
appeared in the recipient address. BUT BE SURE YOU CREATE THE FOLDER to
move the mail into, otherwise the rule can not run, but I don't think it
tells you
Susan
(No, I'm not an expert, just an ex-Outlook user who is not very
impressed with Mozilla.Well, some things about it are cool, but I sure
do miss a calendar and notes, not to mention tasks!)

Nothing to worry about. The computer email client is smart enough to
know how to sort beyond the Mail header style. (Plain alphabetical
sorting -- if the first part is the same you sort on the next bit.)
If you want, now in fact, you can set your Clayart Subscription so
that the Header style is "LISTSERV-style, with list name in subject."
And it will give you a nice header like this one: "Re: [CLAYART]
Email Clayart filter system."

But that still doesn't solve the problem of spam.

Lots of knowledgeable folks have weighed in on this and offered help,
so there's revolution in the wings, but Acers, or Mel, is apparently
holding it back. Listserv is costly (though there have been offers to
pay for an upgrade. ezmlm is free but would require significant change.

The biggest problem I see is that Clayart's LISTSERV-TCP/IP release
1.8d SL1=CLAYART&H=LSV.CERAMICS.ORG> is set to accept email from any
address at all. And while there appears to be a Whitelist, leaving
the subscription option open precludes having a blacklist, or using
greylists (one or the other or both...) and creates more work for the
moderators. It's not that repressive to force all subscribers to
double opt-in when initially signing on and it will eliminate most spam.

It would be good to mask email addresses in all the various archives
out there as well but there are many and that would require gum-shoeing.

Curiously, looking at the list's configuration on lsoft.com, it seems
as though a daily limit of 300 is set on email.

Yeah moderators take a real hit, my spam is up 100%
since I moderated for that ONE WEEK of NCECA. I am
getting more spam than actual mail (including clayart)
the moment.

Moderator has to look at each individual email to see
if it is spam or from a member. Some you can tell are
spam by looking at the senders address, if it purported
to be from Chase bank, Ebay, or Paypal for example I
sent them straight to the trash.

It's a little hard to scan though, the messages look
nothing like how you get them, they come with a bulky
header that has a bunch of for us, irrelevant
information. For example here is the header stuff from
one of Lee's posts.

If I'm not taking time to read the whole post, I'm
looking for the FROM and the SUBJECT, it can get
tricky.
