Holly:
No need to replace ALL the elements. Just the ones in the same series
( probably the burnt out one and one more, so just two. Yes most
elements are Kanthal wire. Euclid, Duralite, L&L, Amaco all use
kanthal wire to make their elements. Cost is the only difference.
Kiln washed shelves need to be scraped clean once in a while then put
new kiln wash on.

While what Rogier says is true in theory, you have
other things to consider. If you have to dismantle the
kiln (say your kiln has multiple rings) to work on it,
you want to do that as infrequently as possible. I
prefer to do them all at the same time. I then know
that all elements have the same relative life
expectancy. Elements themselves aren't THAT expensive.
