smooth footrings with iron/rutile wax on sides

Thanks to all, who responded to my question about footrings. I have no
problem with the bottom of the rings, because I use a whetstone and then wet/dry
sandpaper. My question was about the roughness that I got, when I used Eleanora's
suggesting of tinting the sides of the rings with wax mixed with rutile and
iron. This came out rough in a cone 9/10 reduction firing. I was wondering if
there was anything I could add to the mix that would come out smooth without
fluxing.

Thanks again.

Veena

Hey Veena:

Vince P would recomend trying a terra sig. Perhaps an OM4 sig would
make smooth bottoms. At my cone 6 ox, the OM4 'sig' I prepared still
chips off my clay body with a sharp rap. You may have no problem with
such a lack of bonding.

Not exactly what you were wanting but an alternative.

have you tried just painting the foot ring with a red iron oxide wash, that
will stain the clay to a nice reddish brown color and it wont be
rough...Crista
