Thanks to everyone for ideas on why plates cracked in the microwave.
After asking a few questions it seems it was the issue of a small
amount of food centered on the plate and not spread around. Special
thanks to Ron Roy for offering to analyse the clay/glaze used. What a
wonderful generous community!
I'm going to add a line to my card about NOT using plates in the microwave.

Writing while my husband and some neighbors are decorating bowls for
the Empty Bowl event. I just make a couple hundred, no decorating for
me as I freeze with a paintbrush in hand.
