Hello everyone--
I have been absent for some time, ..... busy trying to improve my skill
level.
As I near my 4th wood firing, I realize that will all that I have learned, I
still know nothing. :)
What flashing slips have people used and what do they prefer in wood and
salt on a white clay body? What color are they?
(this particular kiln is hot, and there is not a lot of reduction)
Since I am firing again in August, (different kiln), I am doing many tests.
I went a little beserk..... Passing through Asheville, I just had to stop
at highwater clay and buy craggy crunch, moon white, orangestone, zella
stone, and aurora. I have been a good student and made 30 tiles for each
clay so far, in addition to Amherst Z clay and Miller 550 porcelain. At
least 4 tea bowls in each, as well.
I plan to let orangestone do its thing, no glaze on the outside. I know I
have to do something with the porcelain, otherwise, it will be white in the
salt.
Has anyone wood fired these NC clays? Any suggestions?
I thought that I might use some white slip on the clays that fire black in
the salt and wood.......
Am I on the right track here or am I totally lost?
Thanks for your help
Beth

=3D2>Beth,
I use a 70/30 mix of Helmar Kaolin and Neph s=
ye... We fire a 50 cube bourry...stonware clay, 12-16 hr firing, =
with just a little reduction...mostly from the natural combustion process t=
he wood goes through as it burns. This mix gives me nice orange flashes and=
blushes on the pots, and looks great under glazes as well. Andy Casto R>www.redbridgep=
