helmer flashing slip/ sample gift

Hi all.

At NCECA in the Clayart room, a man was giving out samples of two kinds of
high-fire clay(pugged and not pugged)
and bags of powdered slip which I am pretty sure he said was
Helmer flashing slip. I have not had Helmer clay before ever, so no
experience.

My question is (and if anyone else was there and received samples and
even remembered to ask if he were from Aftosa????) can the flashing slip
be sprayed on bisque?

I have an invitation (often do) to place some of my work in the woodfire
kiln of a regional highschool teacher. All my work is bisqued now and I have
to get it over to the highschool or even the kiln in the boonies by
Wednesday, the 26th. I have already mixed the slip with water but could wait
to use it on wet or green work for his July 1 kiln. I would like to try it
on some hand-built textured bowls now though.

Please advise.

Many thanks,

Bacia

size hail (tennis ball) I have ever seen

Bacia,
I gave you the sample. The standard flashing
slip is 70 Helmer: 30 Nepheline Syenite.
It may be possible to use it over bisque.
Has anyone tried this?

Dear Bacia and Michael;

Sprayed on not too heavily it seems to work fine.

Hello Bacia and Michael,

I use the mix 75-25, and it will work on bisque if you don't get it
too thick. I pour, dip or brush it on. Too thick and it will crack a
little in drying, which can be nice sometimes in wood firing. I also
made up a batch with half of the Helmer calcined, which you can put
on thick with no cracking.

Best,
