The Yixing Effect: Echoes of the Chinese Scholar
by Marvin Sweet
Published by the Foreign Languages Press, Beijing, hard cover, 206 pages,
with over 150 color photos. This is a revealing examination of historical
Chinese treasures and contemporary American masterpieces. The richly
illustrated book is comprised of Chinese scholar art, historic Yixing ware
and works by fifty-nine American ceramists who are among the most highly
regarded and innovative artists in America today.
The book discusses how the Chinese scholars collaborated with the ceramists
of Yixing, leading to the invention of the teapot. This stunning
cross-cultural investigation is not relegated solely to teapots. It also
presents contemporary ceramic work that either embodies the underlying
spirit of the Yixing tradition or Chinese scholar art, departing from it and
transforming it into something new.
Artists included are Richard Notkin, Richard Shaw, Chris Gustin, Kurt
Weiser, John Glick, Philip Cornelius, Marilyn Levine, Rick Hirsch, Kim
Dickey, Bonnie Seeman, Peter Pinnell, Kathleen Royster, Michael Sherrill,
Michelle Erickson, Red Weldon-Sandlin and Susan Beiner, to name a few.

OPPORTUNITIES
Teapot Donation to the Teapot Museum, Yixing China
Yixing is the World Capital of the Teapot, and it is the only city in the
world where hundreds of thousands people are making teapots everyday. Yixing
Ceramics Museum has the best collection of historical teapots from the local
area.
Sponsored by the IAC (International Academy of Ceramics), NCECA (National
Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts), and the Chinese Ceramic Art
Council, USA, we had a very strong ceramic teapot exhibition in Yixing
Ceramics Museum during the Yixing International Ceramic Art Conference 2005.
After the show, most of the exhibits were donated to the museum, and now the
museum has became a very important ceramic teapot museum in the world. We
would like to encourage all of the ceramic artists to donate your best
teapot to the museum for their permanent collection, and a certificate with
red cover will be received from the museum.

LETTERS—China Trip with Po Zhou
“…… …. His skills are many, and varied, but his greatest skill is his human
understanding and concern for others. He is a wonderful human being.

Working for many years to bring ceramics information to and from China and
the western world is his passion. He is a `bridge` from potters and
educators of the ceramic arts from China. He is loved and respected all
through China for his work.”

If anyone on Clayart wants to go to China and work, study or teach, Po would
be able to help you get there. The need for teachers with English language
skill is great.……
