seeking equipment ideas

My husband, Ron, and a friend of his are talking about possible business
ideas. Ron is a designer and his friend is a tool-maker.

One of the things under discussion is making pottery equipment or tools.

So I am asking ClayArt for ideas & input.

Are there pieces of equipment or tools that you wish were available but
that you have not been able to find for sale? =20

Tools or equipment that you wish had some different features or
additional features?

One of the things we thought about is a tap & die set similar to the
ones made in the 1970s. =20

We would appreciate any ideas. We are just starting to explore this. =20

And yes, we know the pottery-making market is a rather small one, in the
overall scheme of things.

Thanks.

I, and I suspect others, would be interested in a set,

dependent upon....etc etc,

Alistair

In Shropshire, the undiscovered jewel of England, or so the magazines tell
us - so that has blown it!

If you decide to make the tap&die set i would buy one...i would have bought one back in the 70's but i was an infant and coulden't hold down a job, but I've been looking for them ever since.
I'd be most interested in 4cm diameter set and a 10cm set.

Here's one I can't find ready made in the UK...a rubber 'kidney' which has
one long and one short straight sides and a right angle where the two
straight sides join, the rest of the thing being the remaining kidney shape.
Gods that's awful to try to describe in words! Much like a right angle rib
used in throwing only rubber and a bit resilient. I've made some myself from
Silicone when making my silicone moulds. I asked for some samples at the
same time as ordering the Mouldsil Silicone to make my 'Dreaming' Sculpture
mould. I pressed a medium sized rubber kidney into a block of clay, removed
that and pressed in the right angle section of a fine throwing rib. Tidied
it up a bit by hand and cast each sample as I used them up.

The result has been a series of silicone 'swatches', which I can pull about
and compare the relevant hardness's and resilience's. It also shows which
silicones leave loads of tiny air bubbles on their top surface, and how long
they take to set....The top flat surface I've written in indelible ink what
each one was, so I now have a library of useful information, plus they are
functional tools in their own right, and in using them, I get more
information as to their qualities. All so far are soft to very soft, a
firmer right-angle rubber kidney would be great. I did buy one illustrated
in the UK PotteryCrafts catalogue, but when it arrived it was TINY, too
hard, and had a very thick wall instead of grading down to nothing.... Damn
useful tool if got right.

Oh, and another much wanted tool that I haven't got round to trying to make
yet, a rubber ball on a stick, different firmnesses and sizes, much like the
clay shapers and paint shapers stick tools, only round at the end.....
