There is so much to see. Every area has something to offer. If you are in
Tokyo you must go to the National Museum in Ueno, a very short walk from the
station.
http://www.tnm.go.jp/en/guide/map/index.html
The Honkan, Toyocan and Heisekan buildings all have amazing and historic
pottery and ceramics as well as other mindblowing works of art. It is not
to be rushed or missed.
Heres a link to current exhibitions, click on each of the buildings to see
what's in their regular collections.

I'll let others who have more knowledge give you other suggestions, but
don't miss UENO!
Mashiko is also wonderful and a good place to start or end, There is also a
lovely temple on the outskirts you should visit.
Any of the old kiln cities or centres are on my list for future visits and
now that we have a grandchild there, we hope to get over every few years.
Let us know what you found and liked when you are back.

Hallo,
Lee, and anyone else who knows,
If I had two weeks in Japan, ending up in Mashiko; where would be the best
pottery places to go ?
Museums, kilns and potters.
I have looked on Yakimoto sp?
There is so much on there I keep going off at a complete tangent, looking at
pots!
But I am really looking for some critical feedback of good places.
Ta.

Pat,
I don't read CLayArt regularly. I catch it now and then on
Yahoo. Please write me privately for travel advice.
In Mashiko, the Sankokai (Hamada's museum), the Messe, the
Tsukamoto complex including their higher end gallery, factory and
museum in the old minka farmhouse and also the Higeta Indigo shop are
must sees. In Tokyo, go to the national museum in Ueno Park and
the Idemitsu. In Osaka, the Osaka Museum of Oriental Ceramics has
the best Korean Yi collection outside of Korea. Kurashiki is pretty
nice. so is the Mingeikan.
