Hi folks,
I moderate a listserv for overglaze painters and I feel Mel's pain !
It's a helluva job moderating a listserv and he does it very well....We (
the PPIO mailing list ) finally had to set the parameters of our mailing
list to accept only a very small file size because we
had members that would send mail in to our list that had the entire last
digest pasted into it and then their comments ( Which usually amounted
to:" Yes! I agree!" ) ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH .....
It's frustrating to read a digest and have to plow through an entire
past digest because somebody didnt edit their post...........or for that
matter, having to scroll through an immensely long post several times
because everybody who replied to that post pasted that entire post into
their reply....
Its not difficult to edit the email youre replying to, folks...and it
will make Clayart easier to read for everybody ... All you have to do is
highlight a few lines of the post youre replying to and THEN hit the reply
button which will put only those selected lines into your reply...
All we really need are a few lines of the post youre commenting on..
enough so that we can put your reply into context... and if any of us want
to read the entire post youre commenting on ( for example, if anyone
wants to read the entire email that F. Parker sent in to Clayart, which
Im using as an example of how to edit the " replied to "post ) , they can
either go to the archives... or they can set up a folder for all Clayart
posts and go back and read the back digests ... ( Its usually only the
last one anyway!) ...
Editing your posts will make all of us much happier campers... and
it might even free up a little time so that Mel can make some nice
little long necked bud vases! :O)
By the way , I applaud the incredible job he is doing.... and it IS a
big job ! Clayart rocks :O)

Yes it does, Fred, but it's an option (and perhaps not the default--I don't
recall).
To make it work navigate to Tools/ Options/ Replying and check-mark the
"Quote only selected text" box. If you select nothing before clicking
Reply, the entire message will be quoted, otherwise, just the selected portion.

I'm still confused. I did what the message suggested and still got the
entire MESSAGE -- but not the digest. Then I had to manually edit it down.
Maybe I'm just not seeing it, but I couldn't attach the entire digest even
if I wanted to. I just click the "reply" icon at the top of the Clayart
message, select the "quote original message" box, manually edit the
original message down to a few lines, add my reply to it and hit "send."
Nowhere that I can see is it even possible to include the entire day's
digest.
I'm only persisting here because I think there others like me who don't
have any idea what the problem is, but certainly don't want to risk
clogging up the system if we're inadvertently doing something stupid.
Could it be that this is only a problem for certain operating systems or
client software?...
And I certainly agree moderating a listserv must be a huge job. I don't
even like to deal with my own spam, much less what probably his Clayart
every day! My hat's off to Mel for taking it on...

Fred, it seems to me that you are not using an email program to
respond to clayart messages.
The problems you've seen discussed that others have experienced
happen only (I believe) when someone reads the digest into their
email program and wants to respond to a single posting within it.
If you use your web browser to read, and more importantly to post
replies to clayart, you are in no danger of quoting the entire digest.
(Disclaimer: I don't use, have never used the digest, so I'm just
guessing, but I'm pretty sure I'm correct.)
Regards,
Maurice

If you are using the listserver's web interface, you are doing exactly
what you should be doing. If you are using a mail client and
receiving one email daily (digest) from the server, you have to be
careful that when you hit reply in your client that the entire digest
message is not quoted below your reply. Just be certain that you have
seen everything you are sending back to the server. Scroll down, del
what you need to, make sure it's all tidy and no extra bits.
I'm partial to elipses...

This doesn't work for me. I get the Digest and go back to my Inbox, select
NEW, address it to Clayart from address book, copy the title and also copy
anything I want to refer to in the post and then write, as below. If I hit
the reply button, even though I had selected and highlighted what I wanted
to have put in this post, it would not recognize it, nor is there any menu
item as was suggested by others. So that is what I have to do.
