use a square plate holder..!!!! .....just kidding. I have found that
regular plate holders will work for both round and square....(the plate holders
with the springs)....

I make plates about 12-14 inches for hanging. I attach a small clay loop to them
then use a piece of leather to hang.

I want to make some square plates for hanging, about 12-14 inches.
I tried putting two clay loops at the top -does not look right.
I prefer to not punch any holes in the plates.
People use these to hang, but like the idea that it can also be placed on a table.

On the round plates, the loop cannot be seen due to the rim.

Any ideas I appreciate.

Judy,

If possible, could you turn the plates over and throw a rim on the bottom of the square plates? Then you could punch 3 holes in the rim and thread a triangle of hanging material for support. My husband makes round plates or shallow bowls and when he trims the foot he makes a channel in the foot that he wraps the wire around, adds a loop, then adds a spot of glue (E6000) just to be sure to make them stay. But these are 16" or bigger in diameter.

I use picture hanging wire now that is some type of plastic. I tried fishing line, too, so you can get either. It is easier to work with than metal. Just check the weight limits on the label, if it can hold a twenty pound fish, then it can hang a 12" plate. For small plaques, I have made loops of wire, like an omega symbol (an upside-down horseshoe shape) and put dabs of E6000 on the edges to hold them.

I jumped onto the "Clay Times" web site and did a search in the archives. Had more than one page of hits on plates, so I would suggest checking there and also the "Pottery Making Illus." site, too. I know there were articles with ideas on adding feet to slab forms and also hanging plaques or tiles or something. Just can't remember when. Also check the Clayart archives for posts about same.

Judy, I am also sending this to you personally as I am wondering if Clayart might be down again. I only had three messages this morning which is unusual for me.

Judy...

Will your square plates have a foot or will they be flat?

If you put a foot on them, two parallel, small holes can
be put into the foot while the plate is leather hard. After
the final fire, a piece of picture wire can be pulled through
the holes & twisted to close. It can then be hung or used
on a table.

I have some platters (Dansk) that are made this way. I use
them on the table only so, never bothered with the wire.

Judy,
You could throw them, cut them square and put holes in the feet.
Or you could throw them and fold the edges over to form a square with
softer edges.

Judy,

May I suggest that you Araldite a cord {loop} to the back of each square
plate.

Kind regards,

Brian {Croc}.
