Howdy,

I called and found out that the Rockport Center for the Arts still has
openings for a three day hands on workshop with James Watkins, the
19-21st of this month. Yours truely will be supplying the pit for the
first day's firing. Participants need to bring bisqued ware. James
will demo, participants will learn about his raku firing including
fuming. It's a hands on workshop so be sure to call the Center for
details.

Center number: 361-463-9894. They are open Tues. through Sat. 10-4.=20
Call during the week so you can get someone with all the details.

Taylor and All;

Ya'll are gonna love him. James Watkins came to Houston (University of
Houston Clear Lake Campus actually) a couple or so years ago. That man is
something. He is totally possessed with pottery even though he's a
professor of architecture(?) Bloody brilliant. Super nice, too. He's
got a great book out on Alternative Firing I believe.

He also teaches summer workshops in Junction, Texas I'd love to go to.
One, two and three week courses. Maybe this year I'll get to go. You get
to do production, creation, firing and critiques. Man, I sure wish I'd
get to go this summer.

Hey Gay Judson! Maybe we can meet up there? It's just north of where you
are I think. Hot there too I hear.

Maggie,

Taylor will have to ask him in their workshop.
He may change the dates, and will need to
give the access information to the site to register at the class.
Or that's the way he did it when he was here.

Taylor,

PLEASE ask James if he will be doing a summer workshop
and the info needed if potters want to sign up and attend.
classes are limited

Thanks!

I took this class three times in the 80s and its on my to do again list
should I ever get three weeks off in a stretch. It is one of the best things
anybody with an interest in clay could do and would blow a cruise to the
Bahamas away. For three weeks, everything revolves around clay. The
Junction Campus was what you might call rustic, but not bad. There were
unairconditioned tin huts with bunks. The classes are in June, but Junction
cools off considerably at night. The classes were also set up in huts and
were open the entire time. So, if you wanted to go and make pots late into
the evening you were more than welcome to do so and people are routinely
there very late as firing schedules were divided up amongst the class. If
anyone wants to learn about firing a gas kiln, this would be a great
opportunity as James is very hands on and provides excellent instruction.
You should know though, that rather than this being a workshop it is a class
for which you get a grade and credit from Texas Tech University. The third
time I went, I could only attend two weeks and wrote a paper on terra
sigillata to make up the time I was not there.

Also, did I mention that I lived in Junction till I was 18? It's a small
world. But if you go, don't miss going to the dance hall in London. It's a
great experience. I have not been there for nearly twenty years, but the
last time I was there the tree outside was considered the men's restroom and
it had been that way for more than 50 years. Get a real taste of rural Texas
and eat a chicken fried steak at Issack's restaurant in down town Junction.
And if you can, go canoeing on the Llano river!

Vicki Hardin
