venting and ramp cool down

It occurred to me when I got email from Skutt on an electical shut off for a
vent that I did not know enough about venting. I had actually considered
this issue before since it seemed to me that once you had burned off
everything that there was really no reason to continue venting but what I
had read seem to suggest that venting should be done til the end of firing
to protect your elements.

So what opinions do we have on this issue? I think that you should
certainly be able to shut off the vent once you reach max temp and probably
before then.

Older Skutt vents, and some others, had the motor/fan mounted under the
kiln.
If the vent were shut off too soon, the residual heat would burn out the
motor.

Most newer vent systems have the motor/fan mounted away from the kiln and
create a better "negative pressure" situation (as long as the motor/fan uni=
t
is at the end of the duct) - this pulls the air instead of pushing it.

I would think in most instances the vent motor could be turned off at the
end of the firing.=20

It might make sense to turn it back on if the kiln is turned on for
controlled cooling to assist in evening the temperature throughout the kiln=
.

With my crystalline firings I leave it on until my kilns cools to about
1500=B0F.
