resist for smoke firing?

updated sun 14 may 06

Hi, I am going to a smoke firing day and taking along my bisque fired pot.

My question is- if I do not want parts of my pot effected by the smoke,
how can I stop this from happening in a smoke filled atmosphere.

I have applied some Terra Sigilata etc. on the pot but I would like the
color of the body to show through in places as well, ideally something
that could be applied by spray gun would be perfect.

Thanks, Sam

Spray gun? I have another idea, which I saw done by Elizabeth Michl from
England. Take newspaper, cover with water. After it's had time to absorb
water, tear small pieces (2" square-ish size), make into a loose ball and
stick on pot. Put pot in smoke firing. It is really interesting the effect
this has.

You can also use scissors and cut intricate patterns
out of a stack of newspaper, about ten thick or so.
Then soak it and apply it. The pit heat will not get
through all of the paper and will mask a clean mark.
Especially effective eith colored washes beneath the
paper.
