i have always been with bonnie staffel when
it comes to naming things. and she is far older
than me, so i always defer to her.
we use:
`let's go to mel's and buy some pots.`
works for me.
when people ask me what i am?, what do you do?
i say...it depends.
my son always used the `rockford` theory.
have twenty different calling cards in your pocket.*
potter
artist
painter
ceo of ridatick
dog trainer
pilot
contractor
medical consultant
writer
sex symbol
kiln consultant.
smart ass.
you know, depends what day it is, and what
i feel like doing.
or, who i am talking to.
life is far too complex and funny to be just
one thing.
in fact, you can be anything on certain days.
one day i pretended to be a russian wolf hound. all day.
the neighborhood labrador tried to breed with me.
* mark was born and lived for nine days in ely, minnesota.
no road north, only canadian wilderness, and canoe country.
when he would meet
small town kids at college or around, he would say.
`hey, i am from northern minnesota, ely.`
`wow, are you from ely?` `yup`.
but, when he would meet minneapolis, suburban kids..all
puffed up he would tell them he was from the wayzata/minnetonka
area. you know, out with the pillsbury's and the daytons.
`wow, are you from that area?` `yup`.
he loved to smile and watch people being silly.
like he would say. `i was born in ely, raised in minnetonka. i just
tell the
truth...folks can judge that anyway they want.`

Hey, Mel! I liked that so much I altered my cards to say Potter,
Artist, Writer and All Around Smartass. Let's see how many people
really read it.
I was lucky enough to have a conversation with Dale Chihuly. I asked
him how he was holding up
I was lucky enough to spend some time talking to Dale Chihuly two
nights ago. We really hit it off and were having a great time talking
about work, glass and clay. He was being honored at a fancy dress do
and people were fluttering all around him, sitting next to him to
have their pictures taken and asking for an autograph--generally
treating him like an object, not a person. (I had said something
like, "How are you holding up with all this crap?" ) So, we hit it
off.
It pays to be fearless.
