SNIP...........what cone is the georgia red clay?? thanks, crista
Lizella is a pretty broad range clay. I fire it to ^6 ... It rings...
Other people use it as a low fire clay. Check the archives...
In in the 50's and 60's a Lizella GA flower pot manufacturing
plant owned by J. E. Merritt and Sons, used this clay.
It's out of business now. Pots are cheaper to import from China.
The local potter jobs are gone. I tramped through
the old abandoned plant last summer and took pictures of the
old jigger, monster mixer and the huge beehive kiln sitting dormant.
It was ghostly and kind of heartbreaking.
The tools were laying there like someone had just finished work.
On top of an old file cabinet in the corner next to an old
rotary phone I found a W-2 form dated 1966 for a total
of $52.25 in wages. I took some photos if anyone is interested.
Not far away Mark Merritt still operates a low tech process
preparing the the clay for potters.
The only reason I am selling this is timing and space.
I need the space and don't have the time to use this clay this summer.
