there is no way in hell that a school could
have a walker pug mill in the classroom 2006.
osha would shut you down in 5 minutes.

our high school got rid of my walker the day
i left...and tom wirt has it. i bought it and
took it with soon after departure .
get it into the hands of a professional.

there is always the debate about de/air
non/de/air.

i have never felt that students need de'aired
clay. what is the need?
clay is clay to kids.
and, to recycle just makes good sense.
so, start them with basic clay...let them
learn what clay is.

for the professional thrower like tom wirt, and others...kevin caufield
comes to mind...they really love that tight clay...they get so used
to it that re/cycled does not work for them...and of course it
is the time and effort to make new.

i make/adjust all of my own body. i am used to pug milled clay.
and, i have to have a great deal of `tooth` in my throwing
body(some call it junk/stones). so boxes of de/aired clay get dumped into
the pug mill.
stuff added, then i throw with it. ( i actually take it out of the
cardboard box...i hate that ground up paper in my clay.)

ron roy loves smoooooth porcelain, david baumee loves smooth
porcelain. craig martell loves smmmmoooooooooooooooooooth
porcelain. i hate it. ick. baby poooh. slime.
but, i am so pleased that they love it, for then i can have
those great porcelain pots in my collection. and, i don't have
to make them. and those three potters make great pots.

you bet the pete pugger is a great machine, in fact a great
machine. worth every dime spent.

i have an old 1970's pug mill. still works great...and, it is mine.
so, i know about it, take care of it, and use it all the time.
have the same machine at the farm. and only professional
potters ever use it. i trust them to use it as designed.

Mel:
Thanks to Nan Kitchens being in the right place at the right time, I =
just
bought a Walker for $500 sight unseen. Yeah, I already own a wonderful
Peter Pugger, but it is in VT along with all of the other studio =
"stuff",
and I'm not. Instead, I'm still in FL, rebuilding a house (for the 3rd
time) and hoping that this time, "the third time's the charm" and I can =
sell
it and get on with my life. Not bitching, Mel, just explaining "why" I =
"had
to have" that pugmill . (Like you, I hate people that whine and =
complain.
Life can't ALWAYS be a crisis, but it is for some of them. Sheesh! I =
have
neighbors that are still wringing their hands and screeching about the
hurricane while their house sits ruined "oh, poor me,
what-am-i-going-to-do????" while Joe and I buckled down and got to it =
and
have now finished with less money than some folks spent on their =
kitchen.
(yeah, ok, I deserve that "attaboy"))

Gail said that you are the guy to talk to about Walkers, so I'm hoping =
that
with your vast experience, you can help with a small project. I need to
marry that pugmill to Dolita's automatic kiln loader, and then find a =
way to
bait it so that it "collects" not-so-small errant children that run wild
through the neighborhood "keying" new cars, spray painting graffiti on
otherwise white trailers, teasing 4 otherwise pretty social dogs, and
generally making me wish I were 30 years younger and faster...fast =
enough to
pulverize them and teach them the error of their ways. Or, as Gail puts =
it
"Open a can of whoop-ass on 'em."

I'm figuring that with the Walker to turn the little monsters into chum, =
the
fish that live in the canal at the end of the street will be well-fed, =
and
more conducive to leaping directly into my frying pan. Think it will =
work?

Happy mother's day, dear Mayor.
Best.
Wayne

When I was a lad we used to enjoy gluing a nice bright coin to the
pavement and then watching with mounting hilarity the efforts of those
who sought to retrieve it.
The addition of a coat of superglue to the upper side of the coin might
have a delaying effect on your local *intelligencia* when they spot it!
