The Art School at Old Church Summer Workshops will include:
The Pouring Vessel: Making Choices $395
WKS 318 3 days, Tuesday-Thursday, June 13-15
9:30 AM to 4:00 PM
This workshop will focus fully on functional form, exploring the
possibilities presented by the wheel and altered thrown pots. Through lots
of throwing, assembling, discussion and slide presentation, we will expand
awareness of how choices are made, moment to moment, often unconsciously,
while bringing a piece to life. We will combine demonstration and hands on
work. Techniques are demonstrated to make pouring vessels, with an emphasis
on body shapes, handles and spouts. Glazing technique and fake ash cone 10
reduction glazes will also be discussed. Balance, contour, shape, feel,
proportion, surface, character are all words that will come up as we look at
and delve into the choices made when pots are being formed. Participants
will get time to make their own pieces exploring the ideas presented.
Ellen Shankin A studio potter for the past 27 years. B.F.A., NYS School of
Ceramics at Alfred. Honors: 1990 National Endowment Visual Arts Fellowship
Grant, 2001 Virginia Museum Grant. Participates in juried shows and
galleries throughout the United States. Collections: Mint Museum, The
International Museum of Ceramics at Alfred, the San Angelo Museum of Fine
Art, and the Art Museum of Southwest Virginia. Guest lecturer and instructor
in more than 50 universities, art centers, and craft schools. She lives with
her husband, Brad Warstler, woodworker, in Floyd, Virginia. They have built
their home and studios in the tranquil rural setting where they raised their
2 sons. They are both founding members of 16 Hands, an association of
Artist/Craftsmen in their region.
