Hello, I thought I'd re-submit my request for help with a raku glaze problem. Thank you, Barb

A group of us are planning a Raku firing and got together to make glazes. One glaze we made is called Sacco Blue Hawii Copper. We used:
240 g Lithium Carbonate
25 g Copper Carbonate
380 g Gertsley Borate
200 g Spodumene
180 g Ultox Extra

and have approximately 1 1/2 L of glaze. The basic recipe came from a book called The Ceramic Glaze Handbook, Revised Edition, by Mark Burleson.

On reading John and Ron's book, the reference to Lithium Carbonate
has us expecting serious problems. We are novices but would like to salvage the glaze, even if it means dividing it, adding materials and making other glazes from it. Any recommendations, especially from the glaze gurus, will be very much appreciated and I thank you in advance. B

I'm posting to the list too because I may need editing by others smarter th=
an I.

What do you think the problem will be? From what I can remember, Ron
and John's book doesn't talk about raku glazes but about stable glazes
for functional ware. Sounds to me like you are going to be doing an
American Raku party and so will have no functional ware requirements.
I think it might be interesting to try. Mix up some other glazes too
so you won't be putting all you guinea eggs in one basket. Did the
book describe the glaze? If it's a copper matt, forgidaboudit. No
need to worry at all.

You've got lithium carb AND Spodumine both lithium containing
ingredients. Li (did I get that one right?) is a low expansion
constituent so MAYBE it will act as it does in higher fired glazes on
more vitrified clay and shiver. I dunno. It's sure going to melt.

Try it anyway. Be brave! and tell us how the glaze came out on the other e=
nd.
