Hi Randy,

Make them 'thick' (5/16ths to 3/8ths inch)

Thick Bowl, tapering a little in the sides as they
ascend...then, with a 'Bead' even, to have a
thicker terminal Rim...

Wide, tallish Foot...

I like thick ones for durability, but it depends on the purpose.
Here are some shots of old Mashiko mixing bowls with spouts:

I think the little one was cracked in the bisque, but the potter
glazed and fired it anyway.

What size were you aiming to make, Randy? The
size-to-weight ratio will be a major factor to
consider... And how you intend to hold the when
mixing. It is one area where it pays to check out
what is offered by the commercial world. They
have been making a very long time and (more
important) it is what cooks are used to handling
and using. Not much use re-inventing the wheel,
if everyone else likes things just as they
were...

Sincerely

Janet Kaiser

Check out these rims from part of my "Mashiko Crockery" collection (I
dug them up for you):
