Dear Clayfolk,

I need to replace a trimming tool I have but cannot find a source.

The one I have has no name, brand or any thing else on it. It is a tough
all white plastic, about 8 inches long. It follows the general pattern
of a barbell or dumbbell in that it has a center section - sort of
rectangular - and a blade on each end. There is a large blade and a
short blade. This is one of the best trimming knives I have ever had for
trimming slip cast work and working molds, and good with thrown work,
but I cannot find them anywhere.

Has anyone seen these, or know of a source.?

Thanks.

Where did you get the first one you have? if it was given to you, may be
that person will know the source of its origin.. just a thought... or may be you
could make one from a plastic ice cream bucket lid, or some other stiff
plastic...... Good luck... Crista

There is something similar called a 'Lucy Tool' in the UK Potterycrafts
catalogue [but not on their website] for fettling slipware - it might give
you a name,

It sounds like a paint scraper for glass or a tape
cutter for taping off paint guards on windows.

I would look in the paint section at a large home
store, like Lowe's or Home Depot.

Your description does sound exactly like a Lucy tool....I've used them in
the past until I found an even better tool for fettling, which looks like a
very small potato peeler, just a narrow strap of steel about an inch and a
half long, slightly curved, with a plastic handle directly behind the
blade...like a Y shaped handle with the strap running between the tops of
the Y if you get me. Much quicker to clean up seams with this than a Lucy
tool. Regards,
