glaze test to remember

Just opened the kiln after firing my third glaze test of all time. Being
a newbie I'm still subject to the elation of success and the despondency
of failure.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has offered advice along the way
since I started mixing my own. This test was spectacular! I tested a
dozen or so new recipes, and retested several from previous batches that I
misapplied the first time around. I think I am beginning to get a glimpse
of how this whole thing works, although I'm nowhere near competent. But
this time I actually got some results I'm proud of. In fact, got some
AMAZING results -- at least for my limited capabilities and only 3 months
or so of mixing!

Now it's inspired me to start spraying. Already ordered my Harbor Freight
HVLP gun. Can't wait to start working on better craftsmanship in applying
the glazes (Thanks, John for putting how to achieve mediocrity so
succinctly in your PowerPoint presentation on your website. No more "dip
and flip" here...)

Now, if only I could figure out why all these things happen.

Regards, all...

congratulations on your great glaze test. It sure is fun, isn't it? What I
want to know is, who is John of the PowerPoint on his web site?
Best regards,

Hi Carol:

It sure is fun! I actually feel my heartbeat increase as I lift the kiln
lid!

It's John Hesselberth, coauthor (with Ron Roy) of "Mastering Cone 6
Glazes," the book that anyone starting out in glazes (as well as anyone
wondering what went wrong) should read (Honestly, I don't get a dime...)
His website is . It contains a PowerPoint
presentation on electric glaze firing he presented at a recent
conference. Well worth seeing -- especially for anyone who believes
fuel/reduction firing is the only way to get "really nice" glazes.
