kiln post bloating

updated sun 11 jun 06

If I lived in a far away, expensive-to-ship-to place, I would
certainly make my own kiln pots. Heck, I do it and I live
100 miles from the Paragon Kiln factory.
My "claybody" is ground up old insulating firebricks, with
enough fireclay to make a mixture that can be extruded
(probably about 50/50 by volume).
Any mixture of refractory clay and grog would work.
I made a 1 1/4" square die with a small washer for the
hole in the center.
I made small sticks in varying lengths, for cutting the
extrusions to lengths. They compensate for shrinkage, so
the stick for a 6" long post is actually 6 1/2" long.
I also roll my just-extruded pots in alumina hydrate, which
makes them last longer in my wood-fired kiln, so they are
better than anything I could buy.
A hundred posts of varying lengths costs maybe 6 or 8 dollars.

I have had my Skutt automatic 1027 since January of last year and have done
29 firings, either bisque or cone 5 or 6; nothing higher. The kiln furniture
was new as well and is made by Laguna. I have just noticed bloating on at
least 6 posts, in several instances, severe enough to cause slight tearing.
My concern is that this bloating may eventually lead to breaking and
possibly cause a shelf to fall during firing. An additional concern is
expense, because between freight, customs duty and taxes, I pay about double
for all of my pottery equipment, and it takes a long time for supplies to
reach me.
Any suggestions on what I should do?

In 1980 we started making posts here at Paragon in a large
gas kiln. The imperfect ones ended up as fill for the low
spots in the parking.lot. You could find hundreds of short
posts scattered about.

Hi Nan,

I have never seen that before - I'm sure those posts are defective - ask
for them to be replaced - RR
