has anyone tried the new 2006 brents models?

Hi I'm going to receive, sometime late this year, a Govt fund to buy some equipment, which I'm not going to get to try before I get it...

I was wondering if anyone has tried the new 2006 models... I was originally thinking of asking for a C model, but some people on another list suggested the CXC model. The New C model has a 3/4 HP is there any other difference between the two other than the motor size? I'm not sure if I'm ever going to need more than 50# of centering capacity... Should I go for the new B model?

Regards,

Is anyone here using a newer Brent? Most of the things I've found
surfing the web are rather discouraging... Is the Shimpo VL-whisper
better?

If I end up not having a choice but to get a Brent/Amaco would I be
better off with an Amaco model 15?

Thanks

When I decided to get a new wheel, the two choices I came down to were the
Shimpo VL-Whisper and the Pacifica 800.

My old wheel, a Pacifica Glyde-Torc, that was a kit that I built the frame
for, served me very well. I passed that along to one of my students.

I purchased the Shimpo. Can't give you a specific reason why, just seemed to
be the right wheel for me. We had a Shimpo RK-2 for many years at school,
that also went along to a new home. The new Shimpo is working very well, and
it is very quiet, but I'm sure I would have been as pleased with the
Pacifica.

The Amamco #15 wheel is a tank! We had 8 of them at school and they got much
abuse. They're a cone & ring drive, so they are noisy and a bit rough.

Thanks for the info... No pacifica dealers here... I'm going to look
into the Shimpo a little more...

BTW, If the Model 15 can stand more use and abuse I might be willing
to go for it even if its noisy. I don't know any wheel repairman and
would likely have to do muy own repairs. Which is kind of wheel
drive system is easier to repair Belt Drive or Cone and Ring?

FYI - the Amaco #15 wheel is a cone & ring drive like early Shimpos.
A metal cone is attached to the shaft of the motor. As you press down on the
foot pedal, the motor is tilted down against a rubber ring set into a metal
wheel. This turns a belt that is attached to the wheel head.
So you have cone, ring & belt. That causes the noise and some vibration.
Not hard to make repairs.

The Shimpo VL-Whisper is a direct drive, no belts and the wheel head is
"free-wheeling" when not engaged.

Check Pacifica, used to be they could be shipped via UPS.

Check wheel/shipping prices here:

This is where I got my Shimpo from. Several other wheels also have free
shipping.
Not to confuse the issue, but Thomas Stuart wheels are also something you
should look into.

To clear up a couple of things...

This person ( "sincultura13") lives in Puerto Rico.

Because of Government funding, whatever is purchased must be
bought from a "local" supplier. This fact limits the brands/models
that may be purchased.
