we stand on guard for thee.
This post may only be of interest to Canadians.
Dear Fellow Canucks: In Canada we eat our own. this was well said by the
lead singer of The Barenaked Ladies. They were not allowed to play at
Toronto City Hall because their name might offend small children. They went
south of 49 and their dream and first hit song "I Wish I Had A Million
Dollars" came true.
I was aware of Concordia with Leopold Foleum. He is a character and probably
gets the highest prices for his teapots of anyone in Canada. He gets those
prices in America. $7000 and up. They are filled with wax or cement or
something to make it proof positive they are not to be used. Another clever
angle might be to put a F--K You decal on the side. Bruce Cochrane's
architectonic functional teapots are $350 -$550 range less than 10 % of what
Foulem gets..
I was very excited when Wil went to U of Manitoba to start the MFA
programme. In fact Alan Lacovetsky phoned me to encourage me to visit and to
send Sheridan students. Bob Archambeau a fabulous potter was to be Potter in
Residence. We were very excited.
Our students go to Nascad because both Bruce Cochrane and Dale Parreira went
there and there is a close tie between the schools. The students with a
strong vessel leaning have a ruff time of it. ACAD has been poplular because
of how strong clay is in the west. I will now be leaning towards sending
them to Red Deer since it now offers a BFA and there is a new wood kiln.
Good potters abound there.
Sheila and I live 30 minutes from the US border and in fact 80% of Canadians
live within 100 miles of the US.. We look in that direction more and more.
In 2006, I will have done 5 workshops in the US, been in a show with Ron
Meyers in Atlanta, David Crane in NY, Woodfire show in Flagstaff, one man
show in Maryland, presenter at Woodfire Conference and guess how many
workshops and shows I've done in Canada this year? If you guessed zip,
you're right.
Guess where 90% of our video sales are made? A cheque at Christmas from
Atlanta nearly $3000. A cheque from a prominent Toronto gallery- $53.
To compete with China -The Americas that being Canada,US and Mexico are
going to have team up. We keep thinking we have own identity that needs
protecting. I'll take prosperity over nationalism any ole day. that is
probably a hanging offense to admit.
Gotta go. Preparing for a firing. Pots for a show in NY where else?
Cheers,
Tony

Tony,

Whats the population of Canada? About 10% of the USA? It is a
pretty big market. Maybe there is an uban "critical mass" for
gallery shows and workshops.

Also, how many of your contacts are made via the internet?
The USA is the 2 ton Gorrilla on the internet.

An last of all. Do the number of MFA programs have some
relationship to the relative education of the population related to
the medium? I know in the Twin Cities, there are many people who
know good work when they see it.
