This week I was able to say "Thank You" to someone with a gift of my
own making, a sort of "Art salutes Art" kinda thing. Here's the
background:
Some months ago, I traveled to Vancouver Canada to see a movie called
"Beowulf & Grendel". You may remember the saga from your high school
English/college lit class. I've always loved it and the whole idea
that it is the first thing written down in the Anglo-Saxon language.
This movie is just superb. The cinematography is outstanding - it was
filmed in Iceland. Potters will be interested in the interior shots
of the long house and the utensils, drinking vessels, and the use of
authentic designs in the costumes and ornaments.
I became a real advocate for getting it 'out there' by writing
reviews and letters to U.S film distribution companies. When the
Seattle International Film Festival rolled around, I made an absolute
pest of myself advocating the inclusion of it in their offerings.
(Up to then, the movie had only been screened in Canada and a couple
of film festivals in the States.)
It was included at SIFF and shown twice--each time a sell out. At
the screening on the 8th, the director, Sturla Gunnarsson, was there
and did a short Q&A afterward. I was able to present him with a
"Beowulf" mug and later, with a group of supporters of the film had
dinner with him and got to talk at length about the movie in general,
other aspects of financing, production, etc. (I'm a systems kind of
person and want to know how everything works.)
The film has just gotten U.S. distribution and will open in Seattle
June 16, then go to San Francisco on June 30,New York July 7th,
Chicago July 14, LA July 28, Boston Aug 11, Denver Aug 4-11,
Whitefish, MT Sept 8-10. Go see it, you'll be in for a visual treat
to say nothing about the great storyline and cast.
