thorley shelf cracked on first firing - why?

I was in eastern Ohio recently and decided to make a trip to Laguna to buy
a few new kiln shelves, 18" X 24" for $40 and no shipping/handling charge,
with the plan of eventually replacing most of my old ones with these if
they work out. They are 1" thick cordierite shelves made by Thorley and it
says right in the catalog that they can be used at cone 10.
After the first firing, out the of four new shelves, one had a crack all
the way through the shelf, about 6" long. Laguna did not hassle me at all
about a refund but i am disapointed because this was the best deal i could
find on shelves and i don't know now if i should buy any more of these -
and i really need shelves.
Any idea as to why this happened? I thought i heard thorley made good
shelves. I do start my glaze firings pretty fast but it never caused any of
my other shelves to crack.
thanks,
Paul

Could be as simple as a break that was not visible when purchased but
occurred during shipping from manufacturer to Laguna.

I'll bet that 18x24 shelf is heavy. Might want to invest in the future of
your back and consider a silicon nitride bonded shelf that would be
significantly lighter.

I never had a problem with Thorely shelves until they were bought by
Laguna. I bought twenty shelves with several other people. Seven cracked
in the first firing. Each crack was in the exact same place. You could
stack them and see the crack on all of them. Laguna ignored my calls to
them until I finally wrote the problem up on Clayart. A week later a
check arrived. Of course, they didn't reimburse me for the shipping.
I'll be very hesitant to buy from them again and will probably invest in
Advancer shelves.

There has been a huge problem with Thorley shelves for nearly a year.
Continental Clay in Mpls. has been working on it for a long time. My
understanding from Mike is that someone bought out the Thorley name and a
high percent of their shelves have been cracking. We lost 18 out of 24.
Continental has stood behind it (three cheers for them), even though the
manufacturer is not. It is a shelf problem. Not your firing. Made us
finally go to advancers. One sign of the bad shelves is that the name is
stamped on with iron oxide...often smudged...rather than impressed into the
shelf.

Supposedly they have changed processes, or clay body and it is getting
solved. Go back to the people you bought the shelves from and see if they
can help.

I just had the same problem with 13 x 24 x 1" Thorley cordierite shelves, fired once to cone 10. My dealer in Dnecver talked to the Laguna boss in California, and apparently there was some kind of personelle problem with the firing of the shelves. I'm in the same boat you are. I need to buy shelves inexpensively, but now I'm wondering if I'm saving any money with all the hassel of having to return batches of shelves to Laguna.
