A new Artista is $235 or so. It is a very good wheel. Shimpos are
work horses. It's your choice.

I have a lead on a used Shimpo RK-8 about 20 years old. Assuming good
condition (actually it's supposed to be in excellent condition) is it
worth $2-300 or would I better served saving my money for a more modern
wheel? All I have now is a 2 speed Amaco No.1
Thanks, Rob

I have never heard of an RK-8 but I have purchased 4 used Shimpo's over the
years. I am very happy with all of them and they are all still in use today.
I think it's a great wheel and for the price you mentioned if I needed
another wheel I would go for it But again I don't know the RK-8 I have RK-10's

Rob,
I have a RK-8.
I bought it 4 years ago for $200. It had been unused for years.
I'm happy with it but you should test to see if it's a good fit for you.
I'm very short and it suits me. It may be a different case for you.
I installed a new drive ring as it was thumping which was more
annoying than anything else.

Hey Rob!
Your Amaco #1 is great to have learned throwing on. Treat yourself
and get that old Shimpo. $200.00-$300.00 is CHEAP! Even for a twenty
year old RK-8. Hang on to the Amaco # 1 to do your trimming etc.
For all you TS people: check out the TS story on the Pottery page of
my web site. Interesting reading if you haven't seen it yet!
All the best!

Hi Rob,
YES!!!! I can speak from experience. My first wheel was a Shimpo, bought used in the late 80's. It is still my main work horse. I have rusted out the splash pan (I say with great pride!) It has never failed me, always up to the task, I expect to die before it does, so it will be in my will, bequeathed to a young aspiring potter.
My only regret is I cannot afford a second used shimpo I was offered in the area... The price asked for yours is a deal, snatch it up before someone else does. I recommend, Buy it and savor it!
