trouble with shinos

Chris and all--

We had some trouble with one of our shinos at the studio. It was coming ou=
t
dry and orange. Our tech wonder person said that it looked like it didn=B9t
flux.

We did a melt test with all the ingredients, and discovered that the soda
ash did nothing. We made more glaze and used a different soda ash, and the
shino was back to normal.

We don=B9t know what the bad soda ash is. The bad soda ash had a specific
gravity of 1.35, and the good one was 1.1. I used a soil test kit and foun=
d
that the bad soda ash was very alkaline, but so is soda ash. I was thinkin=
g
about getting a chemistry set to play around with it, just for fun.

Another interesting thing about the bad soda ash. It is very fluffy, and
has no rocks. The good soda ash is more grainy, with those rocks that you
have to pulverize.

Best regards
Beth
