Can anyone tell me about the shelf life of ceramical? How long it is. What
makes it go bad. Is it good for anything at all once it goes?
I'm ready to cast and have 200 lbs thats been sitting there for quite awhile
(1 1/2yrs + -)
No immediate prospects for mor either without enormous shipping costs
Thanks

Pat,
Ceramical has a 90 day shelf life.

Pat ..they say about 60 days, but it varies . Even here on the coast I
can keep it 3-4 months, while I have difficulty keeping # 1 pottery
plaster for longer than
30 days. So in my experience the ceramical outlasts the pottery plaster.
Moisture makes it go bad. actually , moisture makes it 'go
off'...moisture starts the chemical reaction... plaster has been
deprived of water via calcining, i.e., it is thirsty, and will grab
moisture from the air, from where ever it can get it... so humidity,
exposure to moisture of any sort will make it go off and once it does
it is pretty much useless,( though I suppose there is someway to
re-calcine it, sift etc.... but for practical purposes chances of
success diminish.
the way to tell if it is bad is...are there any little hard kernels
or chunks in the plaster?
those are bits of plaster that have gone off.
if the plaster feels light and fluffy with no chunks, its probably
OK.... keep plaster dry and sealed. I put it in a tightly closed
plastic bin once a bag has been opened.
anyway. hope it is still OK!
