Does anyone know of a good book or website that goes through some of the
specifics of the electrical jargon I would be dealing with? I am interested
in learning about all the specifics of the electrical requirements as well
as specifics for kilns and wiring and all that jazz. Thanks everyone.

Paragon has published a booklet on basic electricity
entitled "What's a Watt?" I will be happy to mail a copy to
anyone who sends an address. Or you can download it here:
http://www.paragonweb.com/Instruction_Manuals.cfm
"What's a Watt?" is a programmed learning text, which means
that short blocks of text are followed by questions and
answers.
Sincerely,

This was my primary resource when I built my kiln.
The newest edition of Olsen has a reasonably good chapter on electric
kilns, but the Fournier book is superior.

Vaughn,
I have a copy of a book titled "Wiring Simplified"
by H.P. Richter and W. C. Schwan, published by
Park Publishing Inc, St. Paul Minnesota (158 pages).
I bought mine about 1982 for $2.50 from the local
hardware store but have seen them in many
different places since. This book is written so that
anybody who is willing to spend a little effort can
understand the concepts of electricity and wiring.
The version I have covers the basics of electricity,
different types of wire, carrying capacity of wire,
circuit breakers, circuit basics, importance of
grounding, the service entrance, wiring of heavy
appliances (which is what a kiln is), remodeling,
farm wiring, motors and such.
This is a very good book for people to read before
talking with their electrician. It helps you ask
the right questions to make sure you get what
you need and want with safety and to understand
what the electrician is telling you.
My only reward for passing this on is the knowledge
that maybe I helped somebody do the job right.
