Teri,
You've already received some good suggestions.
Try moving your burner back. Experiment with this
along with a larger hard brick splitter under your
shelve.
I pull my weed burner back at least 8" to 10"
while firing. To keep from reducing pull the
burners back and/or turn heat down. You shouldn't
see any flame exiting the kiln. Have fun.
