I attended this conference partly, at least, because it was held on
Long Island, my backyard and I could commute, and mostly because of the
"names" associated with it: Sadow; Hill; Branfman; Bacoupolos;
Jacobson, to cite a few.
This conference focused on everything but electric firing: gas; wood;
raku; smoke ---you name it. I have no interest in these methods. At my
advanced age (75) and with my intolerance of fumes and smoke, all I can
do is admire the results-- sometimes they're spectacular.
BUT the above-mentioned names were demonstrating their throwing and
decorating methods, continually giving tips and enunciating their
philosophies about Art, Craft, Esthetics and the genuine pleasure they
derive from what they do--an important component. I took copious notes
and lots of pictures. I learned a lot (when Steven Hill finished
explaining in detail his once-firing method, I knew this was something
I didn't want to do--but I needed the explanation to know this).
mel was his sweet, warm self, teaching, exhorting, and strongly
expressing his opinions about things. I'm getting starting on his
homework assignment--making a mini teapot -- or three.
Gina Mars arranged everything and all went well; even the weather
cooperated. Thanks, Gina.
