Hi,
I would appreciate your comments on my idea of insulating a 12cu', =
sprung arch, hard brick downdraft kiln with insulating castable. I want =
to use this kiln for soda firings. Years ago I built it and put castable =
on the outside which fell off the sides in many places. I also covered =
the chimney where it also separated. I figure it's too small to insulate =
from the inside, and the hard brick are the old good quality alumina =
bricks I got from a brickmaking co. with beehive kilns made of these. My =
question is: has anyone experience with applying castable on the outside =
of a hard brick kiln and if so how did you do it and how did it work. =
There is a roof overhead and I plan to fire mostly to cone 6 but want =
the option of c10. I have 2 B4 venturi burners.
Thanks,
Carolyn

Dear Carolyn Boeri,=20
Yes, I have used an "Own Mixture" castable to insulate a high alumina =
hard fire brick Salt kiln. I built such a kiln back in 1983.
I used the card boxes that contain 5 litre wine bladders, split in two =
as moulds for casting "Bricks" which I built up and stacked around the =
walls of the kiln. These were fired to about cone 04 before they were =
used. They worked well for about five years but recently weathering =
seems to have caused some of the units to deteriorate, though gaps could =
be "bogged' in if I wanted to fire the kiln again.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.
