tryingout alternative firing

We've had a "burn ban" here in San Antonio because of the draught. I asked
an official with the fire department if I could fire a barrel kiln with a
lid in my backyard and he said I could because the flame would be contained
and there would be a lid on it, like a BBQ.

Hi,

I am totally enthused about the alternative firing methods after reading
the barrel firing article in the current Pottery Making Illustrated.
Problem is I live in an apartment. Whereas, the method like barrel
firing can be carried out anywhere in the open space without much of the
fire hazard apart from fumes and smoke. How can I do this say on a
beach? Do I need to take specific permissions? Or it is just a matter of
going to a campsite and instead doing BBQ, do barrel firing.

How do people do pit firing?

Thanks

Sunil

Hey, Sunil,
You probably need ALL sorts of permits. I woul just set up a barrel for BBQ (good idea) with a few friends, sep. starting in the evening when the crowd leaves.
Bring in the hamburgers, the pots, the ketchup, the straw...when nobody bothers you, just go for the next step and make CRISPY hamburgers.
Where do you live? if you live near me you are more than welcome to do this on our happy acreage. NE Pennsylvania, 2.5 hrs Manhattan & same Philly.

One way or another: be gutsy and let me know. It's pretty hard for the cops to come up with an ordinance about the firing of...eh...Standard 8972B :-)

Be alive.

Sunil,

You haven't told us where in this beautiful clay world you live. I
suppose it really depends on that.

As for burning in a barrel, most fire marshals or their equivalents
would be less concerned with a barrel firing than say an open trash
burn. You want to hear my story about almost having my pit firing
shut down because of high winds and dry conditions. What saved me
(along with a jedi mind trick) was explaining in detail what I was
doing. You will want to give that a go if you need to talk to fire
people.

Plan on bunches of smoke and the smell of smoke for quite awhile.
People around here don't get too jittery when they smell smoke but if
they see smoke and fire, here come the fuzz. And nite firing,
forgetaboutit around here. Where you are? Who knows? That is the
question.

Around these parts it's not too hard to get permission to have a pit
firing on the beach. Let's face it, Texas beaches are working people
beaches...brown and functional.

You are going to love alternative firing. No 65 pound casseroles,
just nice, light, thermal shock resistant bisque...with or without the
shine. You can have yourself an Art-B-Q.

Rock on!

Taylor, in Rockport TX
