glaze question: or this is what it's all about

John H.'s post makes nothing but valid points.

Glaze qua glaze "research" now is in the potter's hand. All sorts of
fascinating things are happening: newer methods of firing; more knowledge
about the nature and structure of clay and glaze; possibly new materials
appearing, and so on. We now "all" are tuning to cone 6. Who knows whether
ten years from now someone won't invent a way of firing reduction to c.15
done only $.10 cost per cubic foot? And then where will we be?

But. Here are three questions that intrigue me a lot....shows Ms Smarty
Pants knows precious little:

1. Dunting: Here you have this thick pot and this thin glaze. How much
pressure DOES the glaze put out to break the pot? Has anyone figured that
one out?

2. If one had a glaze one thought dunting, and put it on the OUTSIDE of the
pot,and put a glaze one thought might craze, or that is close to crazing,
on the INSIDE--would they "control" each other? What does "dunting" glaze
do when on the outside?

3. My Twice Fired Glazes (which Alissa has "converted" to digital kilns) are
fired to c.6 and refired to c.04. In digital fire the glaze is cooled in a
specific way. Now when one fires to c.6 the glaze assumes the durability
and resistance of a c.6 glaze. Does the refiring affect this? I know the
re-firing does something to the glass, and rearranges the iron....but how
does it affect the durability of the glaze, etc. Does it now become a c.04
glaze in that respect?

You see, many ???? are still out there to be answered.

Dear Lili Krakowski,=20

Before even attempting to consider your questions I need to read and =
assimilate your definition of "Dunting".

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis.

Hey Sam,
Yah..but for some people, eager to understand and not fake to be smart and well-versed: WHAT to test???? That is the question.
Once that is in place, your lovely organized rows will be clear. :-)

PS: yesterday I made just about that many test tiles. Hah! ready to roar.
