JULY 2006

*GREETINGS TRAVELER!*

I hope that you are happy, enjoying the summer, and in good health.

I have a very interesting series of excursions for 2006-2007:
*Turkey* September 14 - October 5, 2006 and again September 13 - October
4, 2007 http://www.denysjames.com/excursions/turkey/index.html;
*Laos** and Angkor Wat, Cambodia* January 26 - February 13, 2007
http://www.denysjames.com/excursions/laosangkorwat/index.html and
*Oaxaca, Mexico* October 20 - November 7, 2007.

I am now taking registrations for all of these trips, and there are
still some spaces available for the Turkey trip in September. I have
listed the specific dates in the postcard below. I encourage you to
look at my website www.denysjames.com for
more details.

I also want to let you know about a few Turkey related news items:

I have confirmation from *Ceramics Monthly* that they will publish an
article written by Ann Hazinedar( our translator and assistant from
Istanbul) about the Mehmet Kutlu. This article together with photographs
of Mehmet, his work and our group during the workshop will appear in the
"spring" of 2007. Mehmet is a leading Turkish ceramic artist from
Istanbul http://www.mehmetkutlu.com/. He
taught an 8-day handbuilding workshop using multi-coloured porcelain,
slumped glass, and decals in his Istanbul studio for my 2004 and 2005
Turkey groups.

*SEPT 18-22 ONLY Mehmet Kutlu Workshop:*
Includes tuition & materials, hotel, breakfast, transportation, museums,
artist studio visits, Bosphorous Sea boat trip. 595 EURO, $765 USD, $845 CAD

*September 14, 2006 marks the start of the 6^th annual Turkey
excursion. * http://www.denysjames.com/excursions/turkey/index.html.

I have a collection of photos of some of you, events, activities and
places from previous Turkey tours posted on the website at
http://www.denysjames.com/excursions/turkeygallery.html.

We will once again be working with Mehmet in Istanbul, visiting some new
galleries and artist studios in Istanbul; visiting the amazing
collection of ceramics in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in
Ankara; and spend a week in Cappadocia, touring, hiking, visiting the
Ihlara valley, the underground city of Kamakali, and participating in a
hands-on experience with Erdogan Gulec and myself in his Avanos pottery
studio.

We will also have the home prepared traditional Turkish dinner at Ali
Fuats' carpet shop! We will stay in the Side Hotel in Istanbul, The
Angora House in Ankara, and the charming Sofa hotel in Avanos. I now
have some great accommodation photos on the website
at http://www.denysjames.com/excursions/turkeyhotelgallery.html.

Ann will once again be our very capable assistant, guide (Turkish
food advisor!) and translator. Ann has lived in Istanbul for some 20
years. She wrote a travel diary during the 2004 trip, and I have
included on the website also, please see the link from the Turkey page
http://www.denysjames.com/excursions/turkey/index.html.

I feel that these excursions are getting better and better with each
year of experience and the range of contacts and I encourage you to pass
on this information to people you think might be interested. Please see
the e-version of the postcard outlining my upcoming excursions. The pots
on the front of the card are from a pile of wood-fired traditional work
that I shot at an Avanos, Turkey kiln opening. The background shot on
the card reverse is of the 2004 group walking beside the cave openings
near the Goreme open air museum in Cappadocia,Turkey.

I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,
Denys James
