THE PENNSYLVANIA GUILD OF CRAFTSMEN IS PROUD TO PRESENT...
CLAY WITH JEFF SHAPIRO
THE ROMANTICIST & THE PRAGMATIST:
2 PERSPECTIVES ON THE WOOD FIRE GENRE AND THE JAPANESE AESTHETIC
September 8, 9 & 10
Friday Talk: 6 - 8 pm, Sat/Sun Lecture: 9 - 4:30 pm
with Jeff Shapiro
Kevin Lehman Pottery
560 S. Prince St, Lancaster, PA
Fee: $140 ( download a registration form or call 215-579-5997)
This workshop will deal with approaches to loading and firing wood
kilns, as well as debunk "myths" about wood kilns that put the
responsibility for the final work back in the hands of the maker
rather than in the hands of the "fire Gods"
Jeff Shapiro will demonstrate a number of techniques that he uses to
manipulate his material (clay). The weekend workshop will be enhanced
by stories of the trials and tribulations encountered during 9 years
living and studying in Japan. Be prepared for lively discussion.
Although Shapiro is willing to share the knowledge and techniques he
has developed over a career of more than 30 years, he is most
interested in the discussion of: approaches to work, developing or
associating with a particular aesthetic, and the process of critical
thinking.
Don't miss this opportunity to learn from a master. Sign up today by
downloading a registration form from the website or calling the
office at 215-579-5997.
Jeff Shapiro is an established ceramic artist who has exhibited
internationally. He spent 9 years living and studying in Japan and
resides in upstate NY with wife and children. He has taught at
Penland School of Crafts and lectured at Hunter College , Brooklyn
Museum and Metropolitan Museum in NY.
