silicon carbide shelves from china - any good?

I have been trying to find a reasonable price on some good 18"X24" kiln
shelves for cone 10, so far the only option i have at all is $75/each for
high alumina Acme Marl's from a local supplier which is a pretty serious
investment for me right now since i need at least 12. So i called Larkin
furnace and they said they have silicon carbide shelves for $50 each in the
size i need, but you have to wait several months to get them. I didn't even
have to ask where they came from but i did anyway, and sure enough they are
from China. The lady there said they have been carrying them for a few
years now, selling to schools and potters, with few problems aside from
some cracks they find occasionally in new shipments from their supplier.
They are supposedly rated for cone 12.
Is anyone out there familiar with these shelves? To me this just sounds too
good to be true.
thanks,
Paul

18" x 24", that's a big honkin' shelf!
You're gonna get a sore back from those things.

Are you sure it's not 12" x 24"?

Check Axner web site for variety of shelves/prices.

12x24 high alumina shelves are about $35, silicon carbide about $50, silicon
nitride bonded also about $50, then Advancers, what many consider the Rolls
Royce of shelves - $180 each.

Paul,
I have 12 of those Chinese shelves...mine are 12x 24, and about 3/8"
thick. They have slits cut into them on each side which they told me is
supposed to keep them from warping. I think I paid $40 each for these
about a year and a half ago from Larkin. Mine have been through 14 wood
firings now, and seem to be doing fine. I broke a corner off one, by
accidentally putting my weight on it while loading...so not the shelf's
fault. Other than that, there's been some minor warpage, but I would
expect that. We regularly push cone 13 in the front of our kiln...and the
shelves seem to be performing well. I would think at cone 10 you would be
good with them.

I also bought some used silicon carbide shelves from Larkin at the same
time...same size but 3/4" thick. These were not so great...they were only
$20 each though, so I felt ok about it. Not sure if they still have those
or not. Mine had this thick wash on them that I really had to work to take
off, and also were a bit warped on delivery. They do ok, but seem to be
warping pretty quickly. I've broken one of them too...in unloading after a
firing...just cracked right down the middle when I picked it up.

If it were me I would skip the used ones and get the new Chinese shelves.
I've felt pretty good about ours...and I thought the price was reasonable.
