there are more posts about s cracking in the
archives than most other posts in history.
look it up.
read it all.
in most cases, you will find that clay body
is the most common cause of s cracking.
or your working of a poor clay body...
with some clay bodies, you can compress til
your hands bleed and you will get S.
slow drying, flipping your pots, put your pots
on plaster to dry, all work.
but, if you have a high talc, fine grained body...nothing
helps. it is the nature of the beast.
i use both grog and sand in my body. it is rough and
open. i never see an s crack. never.
but, with my clay body, i don't expect it will happen.
i have other issues...right now fighting some bloating.
it just started to show up. (and i bisque fire for 16 hours.)
and, i am using laguna and continental clay..right
from the pug mill. not using any re/cycled clay.
same for the delam of the hand built pots.
so.
some work to do.
and of course, it showed up with 7 dinner plates of
the set i just fired.
my teeth are rather tightly set this morning.
but, like all things with clay.
if you think you have all the answers, that you
are on top of your game.
it just jumps up and smacks one in the crotch.
and it was mine today. and, i do expect that from
time to time...it is part of the journey.

hi mel,
had that blotting problem once in the 70's, lost a whole kiln to it, a bad
batch of ap green fire clay. returned the clay new batch no more blotting,
that's when i learned that there is not much quality control of the clays we
use, could be one bad bag. i also learned about blotting and did change my
bisque temp. and took more control of my glaze firing.

Mel,
Have you used Aadvark clay called Black Mountain? That bloats like crazy. I love the glaze over this black clay, but just too much bloating. I asked the rep from Aadvark at NCECA, and his reply was that his supplier changed chemical component of one of the ingredients he uses for the clay. He didn't know when that gets straightened. I wonder that is the case with your clay?
