Hi, my kiln shelves are not quite level and thin bowls are warping. has
anyone had this problem, if so what would the best way to level individual
kiln shelves so the are exactly level.
I fire in reduction to cone 9-10.
Thanks, Sam

Sam:
Easiest way is, using a level, put a wad of clay coated in alumina =
between
the top of the kiln post and the shelf, and press the shelf down until =
the
level says it is.

I'd start at the bottom of the kiln - is that level?
Perhaps start by laying a kiln shelf that is flat on the floor of the kiln -
is that level?
How about your kiln posts - are they the same length? I mean, are all your
4" posts actually 4", and so on? Perhaps the ends of your posts need to have
accumulations of stuff ground off. You could use wads of alumina & kaolin on
each post to help level the next shelf going on top.
Are your shelves flat? Lay each on a table top and see if they rock.
Only use three posts per shelf.
What do folks use to hold a camera steady? - a tripod - the most efficient
way to stabilize on an unleveled surface.

Turn them over and properly post them every firing. This keeps them from
warping.

Sam,
If the problem is the warping of thin ware, because the shelf has
sagged, try firing your thin bowls on wads like you would in a salt
or wood fired kiln. That has worked for me.
Some potters will flip the shelves over periodically, to make them
sag back into shape.
