At the beginning of my life in clay in the late 70's,
I took a series of classes from a branch of Antioch
University in Columbia, MD. One of the classes studied all
aspects of cone 6 oxidation and was taught by Yvonne
Lafean. I remember learning about kiln maintenance, and
mixing up tests. Among the handouts from the class was
a page of (if I recall correctly) recipes for one base
glaze with many variations for different colors.
Shortly after taking the class, I moved here to Texas
and somewhere along the line lost the handout with all
the glaze recipes. Among them was a particularly
attractive variation that was blue-gray in color.
This was an opaque, glossy glaze.
After many years of working at Cone 10, I'm back working
at cone 6 oxidation and remember this glaze wistfully.
I'm really curious to see the formula again,
and try some tests with it.
Is there anyone out there who might have taken this class?
I know that Yvonne taught in Richmond Va before coming
to Maryland. I don't know what became of her since then.
I'd appreciate getting a copy of this recipe--
it was probably a variation on the 5 x 20, but I'd love to
see it.
Thanks,
Kevin in San Antonio
