Tony, who is Liz Lurie? I thought I knew all the

Northern Arizona in October will be spectacular -

Glad to hear you have grown since I last saw you.

Barb: I am a presenter there on a panel moderated by the man with the
ceramic brain- John Neeley. Our panel is called "The Train Gang" as we all
fire train kilns. John mastered minded the train kiln. Me, Robert Sanderson
(Ireland), Judith Duff (NC) and Liz Lurie (TX) are on the panel. During the
conference the Tozan kiln will be fired as well as a train and double train.
Wanna lay money on the train producing the big surfaces?
Be sure to look me up. I'm 6'7" tall dark and handsome.
Would I? You bet I wood!
Best,
Tony

An International Wood Fire Conference

Barb,

The Rockport Hendrixs are planning on going though I am more a taker
than a giver of useful information here on CA. I'm still green as
grass, but I'm going to love smelling all the smoke! Can't decide if
I should risk losing my John Deere cap by taking it, so no easily
remembered description for me, sorry. I may be bending Tony's ear
when you spot him, however.

I was looking for Liz Lurie today...

There's Elizabeth Lurie in Farmington Hills, MI:

(Works in Porcelain)

and...

Liz Lurie in Dallas, TX -and- New York, NY:

(Makes wood-fired stoneware) (Tony's co-panellist)

I can't find anything to suggest that they are related.

oh fiddle!
this wood conference is same week as my tilemaking workshop!
Well if some of you international woodfirers decide to keep heading
west and visit the beach
do stop by and say hi!
went to wood fired conference in flagstaff way back in ,oh 88?
it was in May
big blizzard hit Flagstaff
snowed big time
I got some a monster case laryngitis riding the bus from Phoenix to
Flagstaff
couldn't say a word the entire time!
Fortunately there was plenty to see and do
including forging my way through the snow from the hostel to the
Univertsity each day!
stayed in the hostel downtown . nice roomates
went to dinner with another guest at the hostel
a chainsmoking guy from Taiwan who revealed to me he was a secret agent
and was touring the country spying
for Taiwan, recording all activities of Mainlaind China wherever he
went
he was driving a beat up 67 Buick Riviera....kind of a strange
Taiwanese Austin Powers sort of vibe.
decided to stick close to the conference.
the last day of the conference everyone loaded into buses to go down to
Don Reitz place
there was a visiting contingent of ceramists from Finland.
who were there as part of the conference
I got onto the bus only to find it was full of Finn's
who spoke no English...or , hmmm, pretended so.
the bus stopped at the 7-11.
every single person filed off and returned with their own personal 6
pack.
my substance of choice? chainsucking Hall's mentholyptus.
I had been reading the Kalevala,
the epic tale from ancient FInland, full of giants and monsters and
larger than life episodes
I managed to ask about it (my only successful attempt at conversation)
I said I had been reading the Kalevala and it was quite amazing,
A Finnish man turned around to me and in a stoic voice with a hint of a
curling smile he said
"In Finland, we are all like that"

the pots that came out of that particular wood firing were quite dry
and crusty.

I enjoyed the work of the Hopi and Navajo potters and their demos.
