back pain need advise- try exercise rehabilitation

I recommend exercise, at the gym, lifting weights
using universal machines.

I have blown 2 discs and had back surgery twice now
and it is just basic degenerative disc disease, no
prevention available.

So instead of letting others work on my back, I
started on the machines, especially the back extension
and ab machine, with no weight on the pulleys til I
had good full extension and range of motion on each
one and then added weights one plate at a time. Low,
slow weight with lots of reps, adding one plate of
weight ever two weeks.

It is like a diet, "just do this for 6 months and it
will fall right off ya at 2 lbs a month" is really
irksome, but if you actually do it, in 6 months you
will be 18 lbs lighter.

If you go to the gym, don't let some gym rat (I am
one) talk you into using free weights because they
build better muscle. They DO build better muscle, but
not better structure and tension on your tendons and
joints. Hence the controlled motion of the universal
machines til you get a solid core of muscle through
your abdomen to work from.

Give some of that acupuncture/chiropractor money to a
personal trainer and build your back into the machine
you need to function without pain.

I can really tell when I slack off the gym for a week
or two, as my backs starts to ache in the morning and
scream a little when I pick up my large toddler. But
when I keep to my gym time like a religion, I am like
a freakin 20 year old, back wise.

The trouble with pain management type medical service
is that if you heal up or rebuild your back from the
inside with exercise and good nutrition, they are out
a client, so they are only motivated enought o make
your pain go away for about 3 days to a week. And
they are very good at that.

My back remembers 20, but it was a really long time
ago. And yes, I sometimes think about becoming a
personal trainer, I am so freaking fit inside, but I
have a lot of other things I need to focus on right
now. But I am indeed one of the converted to
excercise as a better means of pain management. It
also releases stress and makes your heart healthier as
it decreases your physical limitations.

Now if it is nerve damage, a nautlus machine isn't
going to help you and you might just need to go under
the knife to fix it and get on with your life.

Good luck either way.

Prolotherapy sounds very much like an accelerated
exercise therapy plan and seems to justify my thinking
on exercise as a viable option for extended rehab.

What I did not mention before is that sometimes it
hurts a little as you get back to it. Most people
stop in reaction to muscular or tendon or ligament
pain and it is not necessarily the right thing to do.
Carpel Tunnel is another matter, though and is usually
only resolved through surgery, from what I understand.

I find that exercise increases the blood and fluid
flow to tissues making it easier to get the bad
chemicals out and new clean bodily fluids in. But
that is kind of a yoga concept and I am no yoga
instructor either.

But I am remarkably fit for a person with my medical
history and the only thing I can cite is a healthy
diet and a gym rat level of exercise, 5 days a week
for at least an hour. I have a gym with child care,
for those of you who are wondering how I manage that
and get anything else done. It is also usually when I
get a shower as well.

AAAhhh the bliss that is a stay at home mom's level of
compromise. I shower more at the gym than at home
because I only go in when there is someone on duty to
watch him. It actually makes the $89 a month in gym
service family plan and towel service an incredible
deal when you consider 6 hours a week at $7 an hour
and it is a trained professional watching him for
about $200 worth of sitting a month and each time I
use it I get a workout and a shower...

So they are actually paying me about $110 a month to
work out there. And that is just me, not to mention
my husband, who is not a true gym rat but who does use
the facilities at least 3-4 times a week.

But don't tell my gym....they would raise my rates if
they knew how much I value it.

Dear Norman,

I have been saying this for years. I have cured myself of arthritic =
pains, spinal problems, solved crippling pains in both ankles, RSI as a =
result of working etc. I use kalisthenics (muscle manipulation in an =
organised way) to unwind and sort my aches and pains along with others. =
It is something you canb do for yourself, you need to understand your =
own body, and who better than yourself. It really is a simple way to =
keep away from surgery, drugs electro probes and anything else stuffed =
in, on or up your body. Look in the archives or give me a shout.

its obvious that you haven't looked at the site, check
it out then
knock it
if you will

Of course, I did read it before commenting. It was
very interesting. The difference appears to be the
injections, which accelerate the same mechanism that
can be achieved endogenously, but much more slowly.

To say that something is not necessary is not
"knocking it" as much as saying that it is one of many
paths to healing and that there are others that
by-pass it altogether and more cheaply and less
invasively.

There is certainly no money to be made by my methods,
and no glomour, either. It is simple hard work, daily
and without any hope of assistance or speed. But they
have worked well enough to make someone with my
medical history have a healthy child and recover from
the pregnancy and subsequent back surgery in
incredible time.

I have nothing more to say about it, especially here,
since none of us in this discussion appear to be
experts, only converts to various methods of
treatment.

Disregarding this tangent, for those who have tried
many things that claim to fix you from the outside,
try fixing yourself from the inside, but take it very
slowly and get your personal physician to advise you
and give you concrete tests from time to time to see
if you are actually making progress. Objective
reality is your only guage, how you feel will follow
suit.

Again, though, that's it for me on this tipic unless
someone would like to discuss it offlist.
