I'm building a raku kiln out of a trash can and I would like to know how to
secure the fiber blanket to the top of the cover. I heard some where there is
a mixture that you use use but I don't remember what it is. I know someone
out there will have an answer for me. Irene

Dear Irene F.Gulla,
I think the material that will do this is Sodium Silicate, a thick =
viscous liquid.
Other than that I would suggest using the proprietary adhesives designed =
to go with the fibre you are using. But the cost will be much higher.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.

Irene,
Try bisqued clay buttons & high temp wire. Make
buttons about 1 1/2" diameter & 3/8" thick. Poke
two holes in each button. To attach: cut k-wool
to size...drill two holes in metal cover for each
button...place buttons over k-wool and thread wire
(high temp) through button, k-wool and cover.
Secure connection buy twisting wire on top of
cover...careful not to compress k-wool as you will
lose some insulating quality.
I'll send you some photos & stats (off line) of my
fiber kiln.
Good luck,
Bob

Irene, photos of my home made raku trash can kiln are at:
http://www.handspiral.com/Post_Fire.htm
The buttons have holes on the fiber side that high temp. wire (kanthal?) are
threaded through. The wire is then threaded through tiny holes in the trash
can and twisted snug.
After several firings the lid blanket began delaminating, so I painted the
hot face of the lid blanket with ZIRCAR rigidizer which solved the problem.
The rigidizer (which also can be used as glue) can be found at:

Dear Irene,
I used sodium silicate to glue my fiber into place but I also used some
fiber buttons and high temp wire to secure my lid. I have made a couple lids
and haven't had any problems. If you're interested, you can see how I built
my fiber kiln on my blog site. The link is below. Good Luck.

I enjoyed the pictures of your work and your firings. Photos really help and
thank you for the information. Irene.

Irene, as Ivor has mentioned, Sodium Silicate works quite well for
gluing fiber blanket. I have used it on several fiber kilns and it works
well, to a point. Over time the surface to which the blanket is attached
may begin to degrade. This will result it the blanet slowly but surely
peeling back in spots. A remedy to this is to incorporate the use of
either commerically available tungsten or incanel (sp?) pins such as
industry uses, or the potters alternative, ceramic buttons which are
wired in place with the high temp wire available in any decent ceramic
supply store.
If you have any heavy industry in your area be sure to check for
refractory supply store. If there is one within a relatively close
distance you will be able to get a substantially cheaper price on the
Sodium Silicate as well as the fiber blanket. I'm able to purchase both
from the same place that the local ceramics store here in town gets
theirs, and at the same price. The refractory business doesn't really
care about the piddling amount of product it sells to us potter folk, or
the ceramic stores, so they are more than happy to sell to all.
Hope this helps

Thank you for your advice so I will use both items for the lid. I can see
that some companies try to rip off us potters by charging more for the shipping
than the item cost. Irene
