I think that a lot of young potters get shafted on the
simple stuff.
Like how to use the tools you just bought.
And how to make handles at least three ways:
pulled, extruded, and cut
And how to glaze, basic simple dipping.
I am aghast at some of the big gaping holes in the
education of people who show up in my classes who have
been taking class for x number of YEARS with Joe
Potter over in Soandso who cannot make a simple mug.
So my first class is always just an audition for them,
a try-out, so that I can see what I am working with.
And you should see their faces the first time they
make something nice, that they are proud of, instead
of some zen masterpiece that you have to "get" to
love.
And another thing, beware the advice of wood and gas
people telling you how to fire in oxidation now that
they have seen the light...and are firing wood and gas
kilns in oxidation. Your electric kiln is not
constructed or operated like a combusted fuel kiln, it
works differently. Ask someone who has done it in
electric kilns for a couple of decades first.
