Karen, I'm glad you are replacing the wires. You should use
nickel-plated copper with high temperature insulation. It is
costly but well worth it.
You said the insulation turned to powder. It sounds like the
wires had become too hot. This may have been due to a loose
element connector. Someone sent me a picture one time of an
element connector that glowed red. That's how hot they can
get when they're loose.
Or the wires may have become too hot from contact with the
element connectors or kiln case. Sometimes the smallest
details are the most important: Arrange the wires so that
when you attach the switch box to the kiln, the wires are
away from element connectors and the case.
